While state legislative leaders and Governor Hochul haven’t reached an agreement on a statewide school cellphone ban yet, some local public charter schools have begun implementing the policy.
OPEN Host Brittany Skyler sits down with the CEO of United Charter High Schools, Dr. Curtis Palmore, discussing the charter school’s success and how a bold decision to ban cell phones long before it became state policy is part of that story.
The backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives has been swift and forceful. Across the country, school districts are banning books; reshaping curricula; and retreating from mentions of race, gender identity, and historical injustice.
At United Charter Prep, students become Creative Leaders—tackling real-world problems through a STEAM-focused, project-based curriculum. With creative pathways, internships, and a Senior Capstone, students graduate ready to lead with innovation, purpose, and passion.
AMS ensures that students graduate with the skills and content knowledge necessary to succeed in their post-secondary choices by engaging students, teachers and administrators in coherent learning experiences that allow risk-taking, embrace multiple attempts at learning, cultivate students’ imaginative and creative abilities, and celebrate achievement. Through the intensive study of math and science concepts, students will generate research questions, develop the skills necessary to answer those questions, imagine and create products that demonstrate their learning, and defend their knowledge publicly. At AMS successfully preparing all students for post-secondary success is an organizational responsibility and a civic commitment.
At AMS we strive to empower our students for success beyond graduation. This can be seen through:
An impressive 50% of our graduating seniors earn at least 3 college credits before they even enroll in college, giving them a head start on their journey in higher education.
95% of students graduating in 4 years, we ensure that our scholars are well prepared for the next steps in their lives.
77% of our graduates from the class of 2024 earned the Seal of Civic Engagement, showcasing their commitment to community involvement and action.
We are currently accepting applications for the 2025-26 school year. We are welcoming applications for entering 9th, 10th and 11th grade students for the upcoming school year.
What’s next after I apply? You will receive an email or letter confirming that we’ve received your application. Our admission lottery will take place on Tuesday April 8th, 2025.
I hold myself to a standard—and that’s the only one I need to meet.
With the support of AMS IV, I earned a full-ride to Williams College to study Pre-Engineering and Biology.
