New York charter school enforces no-cellphone policy during school hours

While state legislative leaders and Governor Hochul haven’t reached an agreement on a statewide school cellphone ban yet, some local public charter schools have begun implementing the policy.

OPEN Host Brittany Skyler sits down with the CEO of United Charter High Schools, Dr. Curtis Palmore, discussing the charter school’s success and how a bold decision to ban cell phones long before it became state policy is part of that story.

OP-ED: In New York City schools, inclusion can’t be optional

The backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives has been swift and forceful. Across the country, school districts are banning books; reshaping curricula; and retreating from mentions of race, gender identity, and historical injustice.

Our Approach

We believe that “hands-on, minds-on” learning experiences are critical to student engagement and essential to the process of preparing students to become college and career ready. We believe that all students should be challenged academically and asked to use critical thinking skills to discover, analyze and critique real-world issues, and that students should be equipped with the reading, writing and speaking skills to easily and persuasively communicate their ideas to others.

Our school offers core courses — including Math, Science, Social Studies, English, Art, Spanish, French, and Physical Education — for all students. We offer AP and college-level courses beginning in 9th grade. A focus on writing in every area builds expressive skills and the ability to clearly communicate ideas and opinions. We offer a wide range of Multilingual Learner and Special Education services including co-taught classes, literacy support classes and 1:1 and small group support and tutoring when needed. We are committed to the personal, social and emotional well-being of our students, and we seek to provide a caring and supportive learning environment that facilitates student growth. Planning for post-secondary pathways is central to AMS II life, and it begins in 9th grade. Our grade level student support teams work closely with families to track student progress and support students with both their academic and socio-emotional needs.
