While state legislative leaders and Governor Hochul haven’t reached an agreement on a statewide school cellphone ban yet, some local public charter schools have begun implementing the policy.
OPEN Host Brittany Skyler sits down with the CEO of United Charter High Schools, Dr. Curtis Palmore, discussing the charter school’s success and how a bold decision to ban cell phones long before it became state policy is part of that story.
The backlash against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives has been swift and forceful. Across the country, school districts are banning books; reshaping curricula; and retreating from mentions of race, gender identity, and historical injustice.
Humanities II (HUM II) is a public charter school on the Jane Addams campus in the Bronx, where students, staff, and families work together to explore pathways toward college and career readiness. Rooted in the core values of rigor, respect, and responsibility, HUM II empowers all students—regardless of their academic background—to succeed. Through a focus on reading, writing, and critical thinking, we nurture scholars as artists, citizens, and change-makers who understand their agency and potential to make a meaningful impact in the world.
All of our courses emphasize reading, writing, and thinking critically. Students have opportunities to seek answers to important questions and apply what they learn to real-life situations, reflecting our commitment to culturally responsive-sustaining pedagogy.
Our Philosophy and Values:
We believe that all students have the ability to achieve with the right support. At HUM II, we have support in all classes for reading support and specialized classes for students with exceptional learning needs through coteaching and reading intervention.
We believe that critical thinking gives our students a workforce advantage
We embrace multilingual members of our community with open arms and hope to develop language in all of our students.
The arts are an integral part of a scholar’s education at HUM II. We offer visual arts, performing arts and dance.
HUM II ensures that students graduate with the ability to have a choice to pursue a career. We support students to find a post secondary plan through coherent learning experiences.
HUM II offers a variety of challenging courses and intervention programs to meet our scholars’ evolving needs. Your child will be supported and “encouraged academically”; “nurtured socially” and exposed to innovative technology, rich cultural experiences and leadership development. Our priority is to ensure that all Humanities II scholars have a college and career plan and will be able to use their acquired habits and skills to persevere in their postsecondary pathways. At HUM II our scholars are college bound and proud! Preparing Humanities II scholars academically for college means that we engage them in authentic learning tasks where they use their critical thinking skills to discover, analyze and help solve real-world issues. To this end, literacy development is a foundational feature of our academic program. Upon graduation HUM II scholars will be equipped with the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills they will need for college and their careers.

No growth in comfort" — a HUM 2 lesson I'll never forget. Participate, experience life, embrace mistakes, pivot, and see challenges as growth opportunities. You control your destiny.
Playing volleyball taught me teamwork, dedication, and leadership—lessons I bring into my classroom today.
My advice would be to take school seriously. I went from being a 13 year old freshman to a 22 year old marine.
Being part of PGC and supporting freshmen was my favorite memory. Thanks to Ms. Saat for her understanding and guidance
