Advanced Math & Science III (AMS III) is a public charter school located in the Sheepshead Bay neighborhood of Brooklyn. Advanced Math & Science III was established in 2013 with a vision to provide a world-class education to the community of South/Central Brooklyn and South Queens. We are a school focused on science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM). Students at AMS III are critical thinkers, effective collaborators, authentic researchers and civic-minded problem solvers. The AMS III learning environment promotes authentic and culturally relevant experiences through labs, internships, project-based problem solving, restorative justice practices, social-emotional support and college-career readiness. At AMS III our curricula are aligned to not just the New York State content standards but culturally responsive learning standards. This curricular choice foregrounds the history, culture, knowledge and rich diversity that our students, staff and families bring to AMS III each day. We strive to align literary and curricular choices, staff and student learning experiences, daily advisory sessions, project-based learning, community celebrations and post-secondary planning to the values of advocacy, communication, empowerment and social justice.

Our Approach

We achieve academic success through P.R.I.D.E.—our core values of patience, responsibility, integrity, dedication and empathy. At AMS III, we provide robust social-emotional support through trained personnel, advisory and school culture staff. AMS III scholars have the opportunity to get extra support when needed. We offer all students office hours and we provide all students with Regents prep and optional Saturday classes. This allows students to gain more support during small-group instructional time. With a strong emphasis on character development, the AMS III advisory program provides space and time for scholars to develop the social and emotional skills for academic, collegiate and professional success within high school and beyond. We program each student for an Advanced Regents diploma and this allows most students access to at least three Advanced Placement courses and even more dual credit courses by the end of senior year. Currently we offer Computer Science, AP Language and Composition, AP Chemistry, AP World History, AP Government and AP Calculus. We understand how important it is for families and school staff to have a strong partnership. Therefore, all parents have the opportunity to be a part of the Family School Alliance (FSA) team and have the opportunity to ask questions, discuss concerns and help organize school and community events with the Family & Community Coordinator, Ms. Althea Green.

Spotlight on AMS III – The Fight Against Cancer

This October, members of the AMS III National Honor Society joined the fight against cancer. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a great time to raise awareness about the disease and include the community in the fight for a cure.

Students at the school held a bake sale and sold wristbands as a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. This involved the collaboration of not only the members of the NHS, but the AMS III community as a whole. The students were thrilled to be able to engage with the community, bring awareness to issues of concern, and see first-hand how their involvement can be impactful and ignite change.

When the NHS brought this idea to the attention of the school community, they received tremendous support from both staff and those outside school walls. As a whole, the community came together and donated and purchased baked goods, bought wristbands for themselves and others, and dressed in pink to show their support for this worthy cause.

The event served as a great example of how the NHS continues to embrace some of its core values — service and leadership. In all, the National Honor Society raised a total of $1,044. Kudos to all involved!
