The CREATE Academy @ HUM IV, located on our Beach Channel campus in Rockaway Park, Queens, is a public charter high school dedicated to empowering students through project-based learning and creative innovation. At The CREATE Academy @ HUM IV, we refer to our students as “Creative Leaders” because we believe the highest form of learning happens when students actively apply their knowledge to create unique and impactful solutions. Our curriculum fosters deep thinking, collaboration, and real-world problem-solving, offering pathways that reflect each student’s passions and aspirations. Beyond core courses, creative leaders engage in visual and performing arts, select a creative focus area in the 10th grade, and participate in a dynamic advisory program called CREATE Circles. Students also have the opportunity to take Advanced Placement and college courses and complete internships, culminating in a Senior Capstone Project where they use their artistic and academic experiences to address a challenge or strengthen an asset in their community.

Where We Are

We are located in the Rockaways, Queens. Our Beach Channel campus is located at 100-00 Beach Channel Drive, Rockaway Park, NY 11694.

Our Approach

Our mission at The CREATE Academy @ HUM IV is to equip students with the skills and mindsets necessary to navigate and shape the future. Central to our approach is how a student’s work connects to the Habits of the CREATE Graduate. These habits—Commit, Reflect, Envision, Act, Trust, and Excel—form an intellectual and creative framework used across all classrooms and projects. Through our work in history, literature, the arts, and beyond, we explore the complexities of human culture and innovation. We strive to understand past and present challenges to build a diverse and thriving community. We aim to foster creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and a commitment to making meaningful contributions to society.

Our Results

At HUM IV, advisory is called Ensemble. This daily class supports Artist-Scholars and adults as they practice self-awareness and interdependence. In Ensemble, Artist-Scholars activate their understanding of our Habits of the Graduate, make meaning of and set goals related to their Rights and Responsibilities, and discuss Humanist issues and dilemmas. Artist-Scholars complete portfolios that demonstrate their work and progress in our Habits of the Graduate (CREATE) and present for review at the end of the year. Artist-Scholars can try out for all campus sports teams that are offered including but not limited to soccer, football, softball, volleyball, baseball, and tennis. Our after school activities are created in response to student interest and need. We are proud to host an astronomy club with high quality telescopes! At HUM IV, we believe that some of the most meaningful learning occurs outside of traditional classrooms. Advisories (aka Ensembles) plan field trips every marking period that focus on humanist issues and college and career exposure. By senior year, our students will be prepared for success in college, the creative industries, and other post-secondary endeavors. They will be able to earn an Advanced Regents Diploma with Designation in the Arts and/or a Seal of Civics; two very special honors we offer. They will also use their artistic experiences and learning to address a challenge or strengthen an asset in their community – we call this the “Senior Capstone Project; ” the final demonstration of what it means to be an “artist-scholar” at HUM IV.
