How UCHS is Embracing AI for Teaching & Learning

At United Charter High Schools, we’re embracing Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool that can transform teaching and learning. We’re committed to helping our students and staff use AI responsibly to deepen educational experiences, foster critical thinking, and prepare for a rapidly changing world.

UCHS’s AI journey began with a grant from Leading Educators and The Learning Accelerator (now FullScale). The grant allowed our team to think deeply about how we want AI to be used at our schools and enabled the creation of a comprehensive AI policy that clearly defines acceptable use for both teachers and students.

This initiative has since scaled across all seven schools through collaboration with Education First, focusing on three key areas: reducing educator workload, personalizing learning experiences, and ensuring AI use remains grounded in equity, ethics, and impact.

At UCHS, AI serves practical classroom needs for teachers. Visual arts teacher Marquitta Pope uses AI to create multilingual instructional materials, ensuring all students can access content regardless of their primary language. This exemplifies how AI helps personalize learning across UCHS’s diverse student body.

In a recent NY1 interview, Principal David Neagley spoke of the dual benefit of AI integration: saving valuable time for educators while preparing students for college and careers. In today’s world, being college- and career-ready means knowing how to craft effective AI prompts—a skill that we believe goes hand-in-hand with our core tenet, critical thinking.

United Charter High School’s vision positions AI as a tool to enhance—not replace—human-centered education. Our framework guides ethical, responsible integration while preserving our core educational values. With 60% of teachers now using AI weekly, we believe our thoughtful approach can transform apprehension into adoption, preparing students for a future where AI literacy is essential.
