This is the third in a series of student spotlights featuring seniors in United Charter High Schools’ Workforce & Education Initiative — a hands-on internship program preparing 12th graders for life after graduation.
Faith Fortune knows exactly where she’s headed. A senior at United Charter High School for Advanced Math & Science III (AMS III) in Brooklyn, she plans to pursue nursing after graduation and she’s not wavering. “Honestly, I’m on a very steady path,” she says.
That clarity about her future hasn’t stopped her from seeking out new experiences. “What made me want to apply for this internship was the growth I knew I could gain from it, the network opportunities and experience.”
Through the Workforce & Education Initiative, Faith has been working directly with Dr. Sanya Hudson, UCHS’s Manager of Development, to help plan one of our most anticipated events of the year: the HBCU Tour. “A typical day at my internship involves me and Dr. Hudson getting on a Google Meet & discussing the HBCU tour,” she shares.
It’s behind-the-scenes work that most students never see — and it’s opened her eyes. “The most surprising thing I’ve learned so far is how much effort goes into these HBCU tours.” That kind of insight into the planning, logistics, and investment behind a major student experience is exactly the type of professional exposure the initiative is designed to provide.
Even for a student who has already chosen a clear career plan, the internship has delivered something valuable: the push to grow beyond what feels familiar. As Faith puts it, “Before this internship, I never knew I could step out of my comfort zone and try new things.”
What Is the Workforce & Education Initiative?
Running from February through May 2026, the Workforce & Education Initiative places UCHS seniors in meaningful, hands-on professional experiences. Scholars build essential skills like communication, problem-solving, and teamwork while exploring career paths and developing the confidence to thrive after graduation. It’s one of the many ways United Charter High Schools prepares students for success in college, career and life.
