What Makes Our Schools Special: Voices of Gratitude from AMS and AMS II

Across United Charter High Schools, this Thanksgiving season is a moment to appreciate the people and connections that make each school community unique. Students and staff from AMS and AMS II shared what they’re most thankful for this year—from the warmth of friendships to the dedication of teachers who go above and beyond.

AMS

• “I’m thankful for the atmosphere of support and teamwork that can be felt every day. AMS is special because it focuses not only on academic learning but also on helping us grow as individuals, promoting respect, empathy, and collaboration. This year, I am especially grateful for the friendships I’ve made and for the teachers who always encourage us to do our best.” — Elianny Figueroa, sophomore 
• “What I appreciate most about the AMS community is that everyone always has a bright smile no matter how hard some days may be for them. To me what makes AMS so special is how we all come together as a whole and use our minds to create new ideas and challenges.” — Jalene Batiz, junior 
• “What makes AMS special is the connection. Teachers are welcoming which makes the school feel warm, cozy, and enjoyable. Almost like home. Something I am grateful for this year is my friends. They make me excited to be in school and to experience something new. It’s a bond I would love to keep for life.” — Jadee Martinez, sophomore

AMS II – Students

• “I feel like the type of education we get here is really strong. They offer tutoring sessions whenever we’re falling behind, and that support makes a big difference. The people are honestly the best part. You get to meet new friends, learn about different cultures, and connect with so many amazing students.” — Adwoa Serebour, freshman 
• “The teachers make class really interesting. They explain things clearly, keep us engaged, and make me actually want to learn. I don’t struggle with paying attention because the lessons make me curious and excited.” — Jen Carlos Zurita, freshman 
• “I like the people here a lot. There are so many amazing students and teachers. Some of the teachers do so much for us, and they deserve more than we could ever give them. I feel like I’m able to use my own voice at AMS II and express myself freely.” — Jason Esparra, sophomore 
• “I’m grateful that AMS II keeps me on track for college. I’ve made a lot of friends, and the staff is really friendly and easy to talk to when I’m dealing with something.” — Salwa Umar, junior

AMS II – Staff

• “It feels like a family here. Students feel like they are part of something supportive and familiar. Every student has at least one person—whether it’s a teacher, someone from ops, admin, or support staff—who they know they can go to when they need help.” — Sharon Hernandez, Attendance Specialist 
• “The diversity within the school is something I value deeply. The staff is loving, caring, and always puts students first. You can really feel how invested everyone is.” — Crystal Contreras, Family and Community Specialist 
• “What doesn’t make AMS II special? The culture here is unique. The community between students and staff is incredibly meaningful, and there’s a closeness that you don’t find in many schools.” — David Toth, ENL Teacher 
• “The biggest thing that stands out to me is the sense of community. You can ask any coworker for help, and they’re happy to support you. You can ask any student for help, and they’ll show up with enthusiasm. People are consistently there for one another.” — Ryan Cates, Science Teacher

En todas las escuelas preparatorias United Charter, esta temporada de Acción de Gracias es un momento para apreciar a las personas y los lazos que hacen única a cada comunidad escolar. Estudiantes y personal de AMS y AMS II compartieron aquello por lo que están más agradecidos este año: desde la calidez de las amistades hasta la dedicación de los maestros que van más allá de lo esperado.

 

Estudiantes de AMS

 

• «Agradezco el ambiente de apoyo y trabajo en equipo que se respira a diario. AMS es especial porque se centra no solo en el aprendizaje académico, sino también en nuestro crecimiento personal, fomentando el respeto, la empatía y la colaboración. Este año, estoy especialmente agradecida por las amistades que he forjado y por los profesores que siempre nos animan a dar lo mejor de nosotros mismos»

• «Lo que más valoro de la comunidad de AMS es que todos siempre tienen una sonrisa radiante, sin importar lo difíciles que puedan ser algunos días. Lo que hace a AMS tan especial es cómo nos unimos como un solo equipo y usamos nuestras mentes para crear nuevas ideas y superar nuevos retos.»

• «Siento que la educación que recibimos aquí es de muy alta calidad. Ofrecen tutorías cuando nos quedamos atrás, y ese apoyo marca una gran diferencia. La gente es, sin duda, lo mejor. Conoces gente nueva, aprendes sobre diferentes culturas y conectas con muchísimos estudiantes increíbles».

• «Los profesores hacen que la clase sea muy interesante. Explican las cosas con claridad, nos mantienen atentos y me dan ganas de aprender. No me cuesta concentrarme porque las clases me generan curiosidad y entusiasmo».

• «Me gusta mucho la gente de aquí. Hay muchísimos estudiantes y profesores increíbles. Algunos profesores hacen muchísimo por nosotros y se merecen mucho más de lo que jamás podríamos darles. Siento que en AMS II puedo expresarme libremente y ser yo mismo».

• «He hecho muchos amigos en AMS II. La escuela es más exigente que la anterior, pero en el buen sentido. Las clases adicionales me han motivado y me han hecho más perseverante».

• «Aquí se respira un ambiente familiar. Los estudiantes se sienten parte de un entorno que les brinda apoyo y les resulta familiar. Cada estudiante tiene al menos una persona —ya sea un profesor, alguien del departamento de operaciones, administración o personal de apoyo— a quien sabe que puede acudir cuando necesita ayuda».

• «¿Qué no hace especial a AMS II? La cultura aquí es única. La comunidad entre estudiantes y personal es increíblemente significativa, y existe una cercanía que no se encuentra en muchas escuelas».

• «Lo que más me impresiona es el sentido de comunidad. Puedes pedir ayuda a cualquier compañero de trabajo y te apoyará con gusto. Puedes pedir ayuda a cualquier estudiante y acudirá con entusiasmo. La gente siempre se apoya mutuamente».
